La Paz Animal Sanctuary After feasting at the buffet, students meandered through the numerous areas of the animal sanctuary where rescued species from poachers' or black market pet peddlers' victims have finally found refuge. The wildlife here is enchanting and the flora spectacular. Students moved in pairs and groups, small and large, and really bonded during this special time. I am so grateful we get to revisit this rescue every year and see how much Costa Rica is doing to protect and care for some of its most precious inhabitants. Cataratas La Paz: An amazing hike down past 5 waterfalls. We are stairmasters now. Is it lunchtime yet? A beautiful day in the mountains surrounding Poas volcano. We visited Corso Lechería, a gorgeous dairy farm also growing strawberries in the rich volcanic soil. Milking, cheese tasting, strawberry shakes and handmade (by us after a demo) tortillas de queso added much Costa Rican flavor to our morning. This was a fascinating new destination for us. We made tortillas by hand, milked cows and picked strawberries. There is much work to be done at a lechería. Kudos to Sadie and Ellie for their enthusiastic participation en español. What an itinerary! Friday was a big day and with little bandwidth at our hotel posting had to wait until today. Kudos to Sienna as well as Craig and JV for sticking with their buddies y practicando su español. We had the first ever (mine, too) delegation visit to the national stadium. What a thrill. Many did a lap around the field. A tour of San José included museums, lunch and the national theater, one of the gems of the capital. An evening at the famous Ram Luna restaurant overlooking the entire "volcanic depression" (I'm told it's Not a valley) included a early birthday dance and song for Craig's 13th! |
